During last week's game against the Celtics, three members of the Mavs' "Hoop Troop" worked the crowd behind the backboard. Boston shot 18 for 30 from the line, or 60 percent, about 20 percent below their season average. The Mavericks kept up their suddenly stout free-throw defense in the next game, holding the Bucks to 17 for 27 from the charity stripe—63 percent. But in the game after, on Wednesday night, the Lakers were seemingly undeterred by Hoop Troop staffers waving big red arrows to direct the crowd's stick movements: They shot 21 for 27, or 78 percent, pretty much the league average. In total, though, the project has been a success. Mavericks opponents have shot 8 percent below the league average since adopting my strategy. More important, Dallas has yet to lose a game.

Martell Webster

Here's a good background on Martell and his family... It really made me think, and feel fortunate for the gifts I've been given.

Martell Webster is mature.

That's the first impression you're given from people who have met the Portland Trail Blazers' rookie.

He has perspective, they say. So much character, they add. He shows respect.

These aren't the words normally associated with an NBA lottery pick, particularly a high school phenom turned multi-millionaire. Usually it's his "scoring prowess" that gains precedence. Perhaps they'll throw the "franchise player" tag on a kid and talk about his "impact."

But character? Perspective? These are terms that are cast aside as cliches, old world concerns that take a back seat in a league often preoccupied with flash and hype.

Paul Takes Care Of The Little Guys

It looks like a few people may have judged Paul Allen a little too harshly over the Bankruptcy of Oregon Arena Corps, according to The Oregonian and OregonLive....

Lately, Allen has been voluntarily paying up, said several creditors that received checks from Oregon Concessions Inc., a sister company to Allen's Trail Blazers basketball team.

"Being a small business, I thought they won't pay us," said Jan Beaudoin, who owns A-Z Stamp and Engraving with her husband. Confident (of course), quick (of course), and making great decisions with the ball. Visibly bigger and was playing very strong. He hit a three, and had about half a dozen assists.

Zach-Looked ok. Looked to be going about %75 all night. He didn't look like he was necessarily "favoring" the knee, but every time he came off the floor he sat with the leg extended and took off the brace. He's obviously not comfortable yet, but he's not as bad as that clown Canzano made him sound. He rebounded well and made a few shots.

Darius-Still looked as if he wasn't trying, but I think that's just how he is. He played well. He made 3 or 4 18-footers and posted up strong a few times. He was effective, but monitoring his mood will be a tough challenge for any fan. He still looks like he could care less.

Joel-I was very impressed with Joel. He looked stronger and more composed down low. He was literally overpowering Theo (except for one time that he got tossed pretty hard). He was finshing down low and catching everything. He looks like he's primed to put up a very solid year.

Martell-Newsflash:this kid can shoot. Ok, not breaking news, but he is special. Not because of what he can do on the floor (which is alot), but because he has that special attitude. He has charisma, confidence, and brains. He will be a star. He shined during a pregame birthday presentation for Joel, Darius, and Juan. He is funny and easy to relate to. He'll have this town, and this team in the palm of his hand in the next few years. As for tonight's game, he has a money jumper, but still struggles to create for himself. Now, this could be because it looked like nobody had the option of looking to make things happen outside the team concept. Overall, great shooter with an extremely quick release and better than average athletic ability. Weakness: handles.

Clancy-Surprise of the night. He was an absolute beast on the boards. If he plays like that consistently there will have to be a place for him on the roster.

Viktor-Very active. Finally looks healthy. Was rebounding the ball and playing great defense. May make Ruben expendable.

Ruben-High energy, low effectiveness. Out of control most of the night.

Steve Blake-Suprisingly solid. Didn't turn the ball over and ran the team well. Jumper was off, but he could be a very effective back up.

Charles Smith-Started the game off impressively, but then faded into the darkness. He's solid and can shoot a little bit.

Juan-Nothing. He looked like he didn't have anything to offer. Couldn't make a jumper and couldn't defend telfair.

Outlaw-non-existant. If he wasn't in the program I wouldn't have believed that he played. He looks like he has no confidence. He was very hesitant offensively. I was very disappointed.

Ha-Did nothing to make me believe that he is anything more then a ten year project.

Theo-Played ok. Blocked a few shots, got some rebounds. Didn't play alot though.

Monia-Absolutely lost. He has no feel for the game right now. I didn't See him make a shot tonight. Including warm-ups. He's got a long ways to go.

J. Jack-Didn't play.

Overall, it was fun to watch, but it's hard to say what will come of this year. Nate is impressive. He stopped a three man weave before the game to focus his guys. They were throwing lobs and trying reverse dunks, so he clapped his hands together and made them huddle up. The intensity immediatley picked up after that. Telfair is great, Martell is the real deal, Joel is serious, and Zach is still doubtful.

And this one, from Blazerfan11

Ok here we go....got my autographs, Travis and Joel. They were both very nice, I told Joel he has to re-sign and he said that he wants to stay. Coach Nate ran the drills. He didn't wear a microphone like Cheeks had done in the past. The players seemed focused on what they were doing. Last year there was more talking and goofing around in between drills. Not the case this year.

Ok on to the scrimmage. Players that seemed to look better than last year were Joel and Sebastian. You can tell Joel trimmed down a bit, and he is moving very well. Sebastian gained the upper body muscle, and made great on court decisions with the ball. They worked the pick n roll together well.

Martell Webster will be starting sooner than later. He has such a great soft shooting touch. He got the MVP of the scrimmage. Dixon and Monya were very quiet.

Steve Blake actually made a good impression on me. He was all over the court defensively. And offensively he made good passes and didn't seem to turn it over. He really played within himself. Ruben on the other hand seemed out of control. He pretty much plated the 4 the whole time and never seemed to be too comfortable with that. Hopefully he will settle in with it.

Theo, Theo, Theo...had a awesome block on Joel early and came up flexing his shoulder, much like what we saw last year. Never really did much after that. Ha just needs more time, I can never get over just how big he is. Travis didn't play very well, to me he just needs to mature still. Sam Clancy was all over the boards. I hope we can keep him around.

Zach and Darius played well. It seems that they are really taking the whole team concept to heart. I'm looking forward to what is to come. Coach Nate sat on the end of one of the teams bench and never moved. The assistants were running the teams. It was nice to see Maurice Lucas there, he looked very interested in what was going on.

Nate Bishop's Scrimmage Report

Nate Bishop posted a great review of friday night's scrimmage.

Here are a couple excerpts that caught my eye...

"Randolph was also solid for the white team. He looked fine under the basket, using spin moves and floaters to avoid the tenacious defense of Sam Clancy and Joel Przybilla. Zach was also active under the hoop, grabbing rebounds, and playing fairly solid 'd' on Clancy. It's clear Randolph's knee isn't bothering him, and it won't be too long before we see the Z-BO of old."

"Losing Miles proved to be too a huge loss for the white team. Immediately black started making a comeback behind Telfair and the play of Webster. Moving Martell over to Bassy's team seemed to be what the kid needed. He started hitting three's, running the floor, and stealing passes. Webster was all over the place. Between the two young guards, the black team was able to take a 54-50 lead at the end of the third quarter."

Great Job, Quick!

Jason Quick wrote the best Blazer related column I've read in a while. Call me a homer, if you want, but I get very excited when I hear and/or read things like this...

Ask Darius Miles, who is heaving for air after running a lap around the practice court for making a nonchalant cut through the key.

Or ask Juan Dixon, who was chastised by McMillan after casually flipping a one-handed pass to a teammate on the wing.

Or, more important, listen to McMillan unsettle the dust from the rafters of the Linfield College gymnasium with a booming diatribe.

"No! No! No!," McMillan shouts, the gym becoming silent. "I'm sick of these NBA cuts. These NBA passes. These NBA warmups. Do the (expletive) the right way! If we practice the right way, we are going to play the right way. If we drill the right way, we are going to play the right way."

The Blazers are a captivated audience as McMillan pauses for effect, looking each player in the eye as he struts from halfcourt to the free throw line, where the team's offensive play was stopped by McMillan's thunder.

This is the most excited I've been about the Blazers, in a long time. And there's so much more in Quick's column.

Blood, Sweat, & Tears, OH MY!

I just found this column by Nate Bishop in Hoopsworld from the 6th .

Point guard Sebastian Telfair couldn't be happier with how things are going, "You know just from not knowing him, a lot of guys said Nate was a tough guy, a mean guy, but he comes in and gets the job done," said Telfair. "But he likes to have fun too. He smiles, he laughs, but he gets down and gets whatever we need to have done, done everyday. When it's time to work, it's serious. Whatever he's trying to do that day, we're going to come in on the court and we're going to do it."

Telfair wasn't done. Being the point guard, he has a real understanding of what the team is supposed to be doing, and an appreciation for a quality system. It's only been three days, but the second-year man out of Coney Island likes what he sees, "The first day when we put the offense in, I was like 'this is some good stuff,' said Telfair. "We can make a turn around with the plays and the coaching staff that we have right now... These are some great plays that (McMillan) brings to the table.... I think we're starting to get a handle. The coaches are really drilling it into our heads, the things that we need to do in our offense, as far as being patient. So we're definitely getting a feel for it, and it's working for us."

I really like the emphasis on hard work and conditioning that I'm hearing from these guys. Especially when compared to Allen Iverson's comments today about how laid back Mo's practices are... I always thought that was one of Portland biggest problems during Mo's tenure.

Blazers Sign Backup PF...

From Blazers.com

Portland Trail Blazers sign former USC standout Clancy to 1 year contract.

"Sam has demonstrated a toughness and tenacity at the college level, in the CBA, as well as in Europe," said Trail Blazers general manager John Nash. Here are some excerpts...

Zach Randolph: Says he isn't 100% quite yet. So is he worried that the team doesn't have a legit backup at the '4'? "No, cuz I want to play the whole game anyway." Zach says his goals for the season are to win and make the playoffs. He cited Seattle and Chicago as examples of teams that had low expectations last season that ended up making the playoffs. As for personal goals? He had a sheepish smile and said again, "To win and make the playoffs."

Nate McMillan: What is your message to this team? "Respect the game, the
organization, the fans and the league, play together and you can win games. The NBA life is a short life. You should enjoy it, but you have to give back."

Dean Demopoulis: Music to the ear of many Blazers fans: Dean says McMillan has become a "very consistent coach", and will have defined roles for every player.

Read more in Eric's Blazer Blog

Wiz Won't Match Portland For Blake

It looks like Blake is a Blazer after the Wizards declined to match Portland's offer.

Zbo: Hard Working Man

Good Jason Quick article about Zbo's progress rehabbing his knee.

"I think about it all the time," said Randolph, who missed 36 games last season because of his right knee. I have a lot to prove."

Quick also has this observation...
"But perhaps the most important validation comes from Jensen, a trainer not prone to hyperbole, who gives the endorsement every Blazers fan has been hoping for: Randolph shouldn't miss any of training camp, putting him on schedule to reassume his status as the Blazers' go-to-guy for the Nov. 2 opener at Minnesota."

Blake Agrees to Two-Year Deal With Portland

Schilly from BasketballBoards.net alerted me of this...

From Ivan Carter of the Washington Post

"Steve Blake could be joining former University of Maryland and Washington Wizards teammate Juan Dixon in Portland.

Blake, an unrestricted free agent point guard who was picked by the Wizards in the second round of the 2003 draft, has agreed to a two-year contract with the Trail Blazers, according to his agent, Joel Bell."

"Theo Center" Opens Doors.

From The Demopolis Times

"Several community and national leaders were on hand for the grand opening, but Demopolis Parks and Recreation Director Mark Pettus said there was no doubt as to who the guest of honor was.

'Theo is the man of the hour," Pettus said. The team will make an initial donation of $80,000 in cash, and match funds being raised by employees and fans.

The Trail Blazers have also teamed up with Wells Fargo and the Portland Tribune to assist Mercy Corps in raising much needed funds and awareness as their staff tends to the immediate and long-term care needs of the countless displaced families and individuals affected by the storm. The Fan Fest marks the debut of the 2005-2006 Trail Blazers team and the team’s new head coach Nate McMillan. Tickets will be available for a $1 suggested donation at Portland and Vancouver Wells Fargo locations beginning September 19.

In addition to these efforts, the team is donating TV and radio advertising inventory to run public service announcements promoting the needs of the organizations that are providing tireless relief efforts.

“The Trail Blazers organization is committed to assisting the victims of Hurricane Katrina,” said Trail Blazers President Steve Patterson. “We have friends and family that are victims of this disaster. The Foundation is making two $500,000 contributions - one will go to the Red Cross supporting the immediate relief efforts currently underway to provide food, shelter, medical care and other interventions; a second $500,000 contribution will be made in the coming weeks to Gulf Coast charitable organizations, which will support the long-term rebuilding efforts in their own communities."

More on Monia and Viktor...

Posted by Goglic from the BBB.net Blazer forum

"Guys, I am watching the game live right now. Very nice!

"Monya could be viewed as a player that is just a step before breaking out in one of the most competitive European Championships of all time. After being selected low in the first round of the NBA draft in 2004 by Portland (which was quite a surprise, as many expected him to be a lottery pick), Monya combines not only the physical attributes and raw skills that a modern basketball player needs in order to shine in any type of competition today, but also the maturity that a young player needs to present in order to be trusted with rising responsibility despite his youth.

Monya is a 6-8 swingman who has been known for quite some time as a very solid role player for European powerhouse CSKA Moscow during the past three seasons. The 22 year old has improved over the past few years and did it patiently, accepting the limited minutes that the team offered him, as they were using veteran players at his position to try and realize their lofty Euroleague goals.

Monya was just a useful bench player this past season in CSKA, despite high expectations of becoming a starter and breaking at the European level before making the jump to the NBA. Although he was somewhat of a disappointment during the season, Sergey has been very good in his national team preparation games this August, looking ready to continue his very good tradition at this level, after a steady and impressive first experience in Sweden two years ago. Using his very strong legs, he is a very effective defensive player, whose body is well built and difficult to overrun by most offensive shooting guard/small forwards in European basketball. Sergey’s decision making on both sides of the floor is rational and rarely hurts the team, which is critical for such a young player his age to make an impact at this level.

Offensively, he can be very impressive. He is a solid shooter, a very good slasher and an impressive dunker. What could be characterized as a problem is his often-seen hesitation to take over the team's leadership, something which is not exactly unexpected when considering the presence of two alphas such as Andrei Kirilenko and J.R. Holder in the Russian team.

Both him and Viktor Khryapa are going to be Kirilenko and Holden's supporting cast, but for Russia to go deep in this tournament, they will need to step up, take more shots, play tough defense, balance out the ball-movement and provide leadership, as they could both probably start at the 2" and 3 spots for Russia. Monya will be playing next year for Portland in the NBA and his maturity and durability in this tournament will be a great test for next season, along with a terrific opportunity to give the Trailblazers a taste of what they can expect starting in October. Portland representatives will reportedly be on hand in Serbia and Montenegro to evaluate the progress of their back to back first round picks in 2004, Monya and Viktor Khryapa."

Monia And Khryapa Looking Good...

This post on Basketballboards.net was interesting...

"With regard to the Russian National team at the Efes Pilson Istanbul World Cup

Game 1 Victor 16, Monia didn't play because of insurance reasons, Kirilenko 23

Game 2 Monia 10, Victor 4, Kirilenko 27

Game 3 Monia 17, Victor 13, Kirilenko 13 - Monia was the high scorer for the Russian National Team

Game 4 Monia 14, Victor 9, Kirilenko 15

Game 5 Monia 14, Victor 15, Kirilenko 5, Victor was the high scorer

Hope you all might find this information helpful. The Nets and Trail Blazers had agreed on a deal, pending a physical, that would have sent the nine-year veteran to the Nets in exchange for the Nets first round pick in 2006, lottery protected, and the team’s trade exception as a result of the Kerry Kittles trade to the Los Angeles Clippers in 2004.
“We were anticipating adding Shareef to our roster,” said Thorn. “However, during the course of his normal physical examination, some questions arose that gave us cause for concern. After consulting with several noted specialists, we feel that rescinding the trade is our best course of action. We will now look in other directions for ways to improve our team for the upcoming season.”

"

Nets: Shareef deal on hold.

There has been an official announcement from The Nets.

It reads as follows,
"Shareef Abdur-Rahim Trade on Hold
During the course of the normal physical examination taken by forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim on Wednesday, August 3, 2005, to complete the trade, a question arose concerning a portion of the testing. Bishop mentioned that Darius does a lot of good stuff for kids, that he never brags about, that the papers never look into, and that just never gets out to the public that so often is 'reminded' that he is 'evil'.

Today, a columnist in The Oregonian (I will not call it The Oreloid this time because this article does no second guessing or stretching of the truth.) writes about Darius' big heart, and if you'll notice, there is no comment by the Miles family, why? They don't want prefer to talk about their generosity.

The article is here.

Loyalty, Grgurich, Loyalty, Grgurich... loyalty?

In today's The Oreloid, there is a story on Grgurich and his power struggle with Nash/Patterson.

I have often heard from John "I hold other people accountable but not myself" Canzano that Grgurich is a really really really "LOYAL" man. That is the term besides "young big man guru" that is often placed on Grgurich.

But is Grgurich really loyal?

You know, I don't think so.

I think Grgurich is very spiteful, and vengeful with a dash of loyalty to one person thrown in.

Grgurich isn't loyal to the young players that depend on him.

Grgurich isn't loyal to the people who write his hefty checks out.

Grgurich isn't loyal to the people who write the check for his close friend out.

No, instead, Grgurich is very spiteful/vengeful to the orginization that fires/lets go/doesn't pay the coach. (The one person that he is a bit loyal to.). Instead, he wants to leave the orginization high and dry, the young players high and dry, and take his hefty paycheck and find a new place that will pay him another hefty sum.

Our young players need Grgurich for their advancement. Travis spent most of the off-season with Grgurich. Travis has blossomed under Grgurich.

Yet, Grgurich now wants to go to another orginization, work with other young players, and get a new hefty contract just because his friend was fired for doing a damn shoddy job.

Nice loyalty.

The Dixon Scouting Report.

An associate of mine over at the RealGM forums by the name of DMiles23 (who by the way thinks I'm totally not funny ;)) asked for a scouting report from the Wizard fans a few weeks ago.

If you wish to see these reports by the fans, take a look if you wish.

Juan Dixon.

Portland has come to terms with Juan Dixon, according to The Washington Post. Chad Ford is reporting that the Nets and Blazers have agreed to a deal that will send SAR to the Nets via S&T for their 4.9 million TE along with their 2006 lottery protected 1st round pick.

Blazers had nothing to lose, and they gained everything in the world just then. 3 first round picks next year. A few things of note.

1. Keyon Dooling has been offered a 3 year, 9 million dollar deal, according to RealGM.

What does this mean for the Blazers? Big things. The Nets want Keyon Dooling to be their backup combo guard. The chances of Miami working out a sign and trade with a conference rivaling contender? Very, very unlikely. The Nets need their MLE to sign Dooling. If they sign SAR with it, they will be unlikely to sign him, or anyone else of significance.

2. According to NJ.com, it looks like Nash is winning the staring contest. It reports that The Nets, according to a westeren conference executive are prepared to offer a lottery protected first round pick, hopefully for this year. Why? Partly because they really want SAR, and they also need their MLE.

What does this mean for the Blazers? It means if Nash pulls this off, we all better bring some eye drops to his house for his great performance of not blinking.

Martell.

There is an article by The Portland Tribune from yesterday, about Martell Webster. He will probably start some at the two, as well.

It is obvious Nash was unwilling to offer Daniels a five year deal, and it is understandable. Either way, he will be a Net.

I find this whole situation incredibly amusing. One of the articles this morning suggests that Portland is greedy because they were unwilling to hand over Shareef Abdur-Rahim for an extra year, along with ten million extra, unless it was for a first round pick. Well, let us break down the situation.

1. If Portland agrees to a sign and trade for the TE, that enables The Nets to be able to keep their MLE. This will be used on more front court depth and most likely Kenyon Dooling.
2. The Nets could have allowed Kenyon Martin to go to The Denver Nuggets for the 6 year, 74 million dollar deal they were going to sign him to. Instead, they were greedy, and did a sign and trade and got three, count 'em, THREE, first round picks. They aren't willing to cough up one of those for Shareef? For a 6 year, 38 million dollar deal? But.. Portland is greedy, and New Jersey isn't?
3. Portland has no use for the TE. They won't use it to add another player, it can't be combined with other players (only draft rights and picks.). It is basically just worthless to us.

Please, guys, let's be realistic. Aaron Goodwin has done nothing to endear himself nor his client to Portland, and get them to take on a worthless second round pick. If we would have agreed to give him the S&T for a second round pick, we would be giving them their MLE, along with making them contenders in the East.

I would prefer SAR sign with the Nets for their MLE, and us get nothing, rather then allow them to keep their MLE, and only get two second round picks in return. If a sign and trade is worked out, and all we get our two second round picks, I will be disappointed.

This is a business, my friends. You do not help other teams, and just 'accept what is being offered.'

Oh, and further down in that article, it talks about Kenyon Dooling. How they would maybe try to orchestrate a sign and trade, but Miami may not be willing. ... No mention of them being greedy, is there?

Yeah, that is what I thought.

Juan Dixon, Damien Wilkins, and Antonio Daniels.

The Washington Post says that Juan Dixon will be meeting with the Trailblazers sometime this week. It is in the Wizards notes at the bottom of the article.

Here is Juan's profile. He is someone I was hoping the Blazers would draft in 2002, but he went to the Wizards ahead of us. Instead, we got Qyntel.

Also, it was reported on 1080 The Fan, as well as during courtside, that the Blazers met with Damien Wilkins last night. Damien is a RFA, and I believe Juan Dixon is a UFA.

Also, Nash said last night on 1080 The Fan that he does not know if we will work things out with Antonio Daniels, because he MAY want more years then Nash is willing to offer. Apparently Daniels wants a 5 year deal, with the Lakers (the other team in the mix) only offering two. Perhaps we could offer a four year deal, with the fourth being a team option.

Apparentl Damien Wilkins is a high energy hustle guy that Nate McMillan likes. Juan Dixon is a shoot first point guard. He's 6'3, so he's too small to play the 2.

I'd still prefer Antonio Daniels. Antonio is only 6'4, but he plays big and physical. He's a great guy off the court, and would be a great veteran leader to the young guys. He could start at the two, and backup the point. He's a slasher though. So, we'll see.

Larry Brown out in Detroit.

I know this doesn't relate to the Blazers, but it appears that Larry Brown is out in Detroit, according to ESPN.

Also, from now on, please go to this address for the blog:

http://blog.blazermania.com/

It is very essential for me that you go to that site, instead of this one. Think Laker fans, who are now not so many as they were two years ago.

I do not understand bandwagoning. I think you should pick one team and stick with it. Now, don't get me wrong, I think it is okay to root for another in say, the playoffs, once your team is out of them. I will generally root for the Pacers since they are;

A. Reggie Miller was playing there, too.

I often hear tales, either directly or from other parties about bandwagon fans who will show at championship parties without any real 'choice' on who they want to win, but then the next week been seen wearing the winning teams jersey and telling people how they had known that <insert> was going to take it all.

Why waste your money on jerseys of a team you are just cheering for because they are 'winning'. How does this make you a 'winner'? Of course, they fail to mention how he was injured, what he injured, or when it happened. Thanks for creating chaos guys!

Martell shot 4-15, but 2-4 from downtown. Disappointing, but was probably forced to create most of his offense with Telfair only playing 18 minutes before his injury. Martell played 35.

Travis shot 4-16, also disappointing. I imagine he was lost without Telfair out there. Hopefully they bounce back at their next game, and also I hope Monia will secure his visa and be there.

Telfair shot 2-13 before he got injured, including 0-3 from downtown. Thirteen shot attempts in 18 minutes. Need to see less of that, definitely. I don't imagine that'll transfer over into the season, though. Hopefully the injury isn't serious, and as soon as I find some information on it I'll post it.

Despite DraftExpress trying to say we were up 40-24 at halftime, it was actually the other way around. So no, we didn't blow a sixteen point lead. Infact, I think the team did fairly well in keeping up with Dallas in the second half, despite being unable to recover from the 16 point deficit and without Telfair.

For a full look at the game, visit the boxscore.

Draftexpress updates.

Draft Express is offering live updates on the games. A good read.

New Jerseys.

I can't remember where I first got this link from, but I believe it was someone from Niketalk's sport forum...

There are some small changes that are coming to the jerseys, this is one of them.

Notice how it says Portland, instead of Blazers?

Also sa1177 on the bbb.net forums, claims to have once worked in the marketing department for the Blazers, and offers some insight on what will be the 'new' jerseys.

Relive the past.

Thanks to CanJohno on the bbb.net forums for letting us know that ESPN Classic is playing Game 1# of the Blazers/Pistons 1990 NBA finals at this very moment. />
An article by the Tribune on Blazers Broadcaster Steve "The Snapper" Jones.

---

I am pleased by the Nate McMillan hiring. At first, I was so-so. He has developed some nice players in Seattle with Ridnour and Rashard Lewis. I believe he can do the same for our youngsters, along with instilling defense in them. I feel many of our youngsters are receptive to positive reinforcement, as long as it is constant.

Not like Cheeks, who is one moment your buddy, but then is humiliating you in the video room.

I am really impressed by Martell's maturity, as demonstrated in Jason Quick's article today.

He is wise beyond his years, which has become a refreshing change lately with Sebastian and Martell being drafted, instead of the Qyntel's of the world.

Tomorrow is game three for Portland in the Vegas summer league, where they will playing the Dallas Mavericks at 5pm.

Marquis Daniels will be in that game, although I do not believe Devin Harris (who has been disappointing thus far, for a top five pick in his second year.) will be because he was fouled hard by Gerald Green yesterday and couldn't even shoot his free throws.

Marquis is a good defender who could put the clamps down on Martell or Travis. A nice mix of offensive and defensive players with shooting.

I don't really have anything to add to this, expect to say I was pleased by the outcome of the draft. Although ideally I would have preferred we traded either next years first round from Detroit along with the second rounder for the 22nd, and then with the 27th picked Turiaf or Simien. Or the 27th and next years secound rounder for it. Then at 35 we could pick Turiaf. I just would have preferred to pick up Turiaf in this draft as well as Jack.

I don't understand bandwagon fans either, so I will be making an entry on this later.

First date jitters.

The draft is like a first date. Every year, unless you are one of those unfortunate teams that do not have a first round pick. Perhaps fortunate, for the fans. No jitters.

Speculation is running rampant on what the Blazers will do. Several reports have been coming out the past twelve hours that Portland and Utah have a trade in place with a few conditions. Condition one is that Marvin Williams or Andrew Bogut don't drop to three. Number two is that the Blazers can take a better deal if it comes along. Here is what the deal is speculated to be.

#3
Ruben Patterson

For

#6
Gordan Giriceck
Kirk Snyder

and possibly the #27.

I do not like this trade. This trade makes me nervous. It makes me feel that the Blazers would then pass up Gerald Green and Martell Webster and take a C prospect like Andrew Bynum, which is also what some reports are saying.

Here is a trade I would like to see.

#3
Ruben Patterson

for

#6
Gordan Giriceck
Kris Humhpries
Curtis Borchardt

and either the #27 or #34

This gives Portland a physical backup power forward behind Zach, who also has a nice offensive touch. Portland would get Martell or Green, most likely Martell, with the sixth pick.

This would leave us with a possible line up, if Portland waived Derek Anderson, as..

Telfair/(Robinson?)Or a vet MLE PG
Webster/Giriceck/Monya
Miles/Outlaw/Khryapa
Randolph/Humphries
Pryzbilla/Ratliff

I think this is a much better lineup then..

Telfair/Robinson or Vet PG
Snyder/Giriceck/Monya
Miles/Outlaw/Khryapa
Randolph/Turiaf?
Joel/Theo/Bynum/Ha

The reason I leave Borchardt off is I believe he would be waived, but it is possible he'd be third in the center rotation. He is a legit 7 footer.

I hope we do not pass on Martell or Gerald for Bynum. I have no problem picking up Bynum with a second first round pick, but not before these guys.

I have also read from several posters on various boards that they remember John Nash in an interview after last year's draft stating he thought Kirk Snyder was nothing more then a good college player. I do not see why he would want him now.

Snyder also had some problems in Utah, being suspended and benched by Coach Jerry Sloan for taunting and shouting racist (I believe) things at the Houston bench after a so-so play he made. He was also in a parking lot arena fight with Jerry Stackhouse of the Dallas Mavericks.

The Zach #3 for Boozer #6 trade I believe are simply unrealistic. I don't know if the new CBA will take away Zach's PPP contract. However, while still under this CBA until July, it isn't possible. Randolph's contract was also 6 years, 84 million, compared to Boozer's 6 year, 66 million. So Utah would have to throw in I believe around 2-3 million filler.

We will know the fate of our Blazers tonight. It will be interesting. I just hope it isn't a bad interesting.

In other news, I'd like to give my congratulations to Jason Quick for manning up in his chat yesterday and apologizing for his irresponsible reporting. He not only apologized for that, but also for his immature reactions during interviews with 1080 The Fan, along with trying to suggest it was the Blazers' fault for his article being wrong. Even if he was sat down and told to do this, I appreciate him doing it. Much more can be said for him apologizing, that can't be said for John Canzano instead writing a three page article on how it was Nash's fault and how they should switch jobs. Or for chat host Kevin still trying to blame the Blazers after Quick's apology.

Surprisingly, Quick has also been writing some good articles lately. So props to Jason Quick.

Journalism.. for real?

The Webster Story.

For all the bashing of The Oregonian I do, I must admit that Jason Quick's article this morning is very good. Terry Porter for Coach? No. Marc Iavaroni? Maybe. The Oregonian shows their worth.

So many topics, so much time. I think.

Welcome back faithful readers, it has been a week or so since my last entry. I apologize, as I have been busy doing other things. I assure you this will pick up much more once the draft takes place, as summer league comes along, as training camp opens, and the season begins.

First, let me say one thing. Tonight I am happy! I take a certain pleasure in Detroit losing, and annoying Sheed loving trolls getting kicked in the mouth. I know, that isn't nice. However, certain trolls in the http://www.oregonlive.com/forums/blazers have caused me to choose to feel this way.

Did karma take place? Was their losing an act of karma, for the chain of events Ben Wallace started back in November, in that disgusting brawl? For putting in motion the loss of Indiana's season? The last chance for Reggie Miller that was washed away?

Now, on to the recent firing of Coach Terry Porter.

While his firing wasn't obvious, and quite a shock considering last month his assistants had been fired, it does deliver a dilema to the TrailBlazers. Already Portland media and fans are insisting on the hiring of Coach Porter for our vacant position. A coach that will connect us back to the last real glory days of Portland. A coach who is.. not much of an upgrade over Maurice Cheeks, unfortunately. As a frequent visiter and participater on http://realgm.com/boards/index.php, the TrailBlazer board there was right on top of the news of Porter's firing. We asked questions amongst ourselves, "Will Porter be hired?" "Should we hire him over McMillian, or Iavaroni?" "Is.. Porter better then Cheeks?" Luckily, we got some input from Bucks fans which I will now share snippets with you.

Input from VegasVic, a moderator for the Bucks board on http://realgm.com/boards/index.php

"As a Bucks season ticket holder who has seen Porter in action I wouldn't get too excited about him as a coach. Yes he's a local hero. He was in Milwaukee too (grew up and went to high school here). But he wasn't a good teacher which is one reason he was let go. The Bucks have a young and getting younger team and need a better teacher. He may be good for Telfair but he could do that as an assistant with you, rather than as a head coach. His rotations were puzzling, his defensive schemes terrible."

From El Duderino, also from the Bucks board. Who has perhaps one of the greatest icons ever.

"As a Bucks fan,i was happy to see Porter go.Granted the talent was mediocre, but the team played zero defense for both years he was coach.Overall the Bucks were just soft as butter in Porter's time here regardless if he had average talent at best. "

I'm sorry, but this sounds exactly like Maurice. I trust their opinions on this matter, as they have no reason to lie. I just think Portland needs to pass. Which.. leads to another problem.

Like I said, Portland media and fans, for the most part, are calling for Terry's name. This is going to bite the Blazers in the backside. If Portland doesn't hire him, they're going to call for their heads for not hiring one of the most beloved Blazers of all time. If they do hire him, and he's just as bad as Cheeks, they're going to scream at the TrailBlazers for hiring a bad coach, and settling. Not getting a big name.

I am in the firm belief that Portland should hire Iavaroni, who has had experiencing in developing good big men, and has been taught under great coaches like Pat Riley and Mike Fratello, and another but the name escapes me. He brings in an uptempo offense, which is what we want. Zach likes him, Grgurich is a close friend of his, and it looks like he would come back with no objections if Iavaroni was hired.

I also wouldn't mind Carlesimo, which I know isn't a popular choice. However, he does have a lot of head coaching experience, and has been taught under the great Coach Popovich. Carlesimo now has two rings on his fingers, and apparently good relationships with players as it was reported Duncan and Ginobli were devestated to learn that Carlesimo had started interviewing with other teams.

I trust Portland to make the right decision, and not (hopefully) the easy PR hire.

The Oregonian last week showed that it was at the top of the journalism game, proving that it goes to all lengths and ends to provide you with hard facts!

Haha, okay, now that we can all breathe again.

I found The Oregonian's blunder last week to be one of the greatest things I have witnessed in the last two years. Not only was Quick's source Canzano, but then the two pals tried to blame it on the TrailBlazers. Suggesting it was the organization's fault for not sharing vital draft and coaching information freely to bumbling reporters Canzano and Quick.

Well, boys, maybe they don't share information with you two because neither of you have the slightest clue of how the (almost defunct) CBA worked, or about options on contracts of our players. Shouldn't this be a requirement when you apply for a job covering a professional sports team? Maybe they don't want to share information with you because you do whatever it takes to BASH THEM at every turn. You like to use words to trick the readers, which is unfortunate. Canzano constantly tells the fans not to listen to what the TrailBlazers tell us, because all they're trying to do is confuse us and tell us what to do..

Well, isn't that what Canzano is doing?

Canzano and Quick's irresponsible 'reporting' has cost The Oregonian both advertising from The TrailBlazers, along with subscriptions from disgruntled readers who stopped buying because they were tired of the Gossip Pals.

If I am presented articles about how evil the TrailBlazers are for firing people who leak information, or for investigating computers to check for leaks, I want to hear the same thing about Nike. Nike, as we all know, is also a major fixture in Oregon. That would be top news. Businesses aren't evil for firing people who leak reporters vital information, that is how they stay in business. Ooooh, freaky concept.

One more thing. Why aren't one of the three reporters down in Los Angeles talking to Grgurich, Joel and Outlaw about how their summer training is going? Outlaw has been down there with Grgurich since MAY, working daily with Tim. I want to hear about that. I want to know about his development.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://blazermaniablog.blogspot.com/2005/06/karma-did-you-make-appearance-terry.html' title='Karma, did you make an appearance? Typically disgruntled Laker fans who keep living back in the year 2000. (You are not living on a Conan O'Brien night show segment, LF's. Back to earth, with you.) Usually they will come in at the start of night and disrupt thoughtful conversation. It generally takes the mods anywhere from one minute, to TWO HOURS to get rid of the trolls and the posts. (although it only takes them thirty seconds to get rid of my asking people if they are on narcotics.) Http://www.blazerboard.com offers an alternative place of discussion during the time that the troll tries to take over http://www.oregonlive.com/forums/blazers/index.ssf

3. http://www.oregonlive.com/forums/blazers/index.ssf mods do not seem very friendly when in regards to site creator, PHATGUYSRULE posting a link to the newest interview/article on http://www.blazermania.com , often deleting the post to a good article, or questionnaire.

4. http://www.blazerboard.com is (I believe) more heavily and objectively moderated. There will be no out of control spazzes like Oregonlive sometimes contain.

I also hate to be the bearer of bad news, but...

Neither http://www.blazermania.com nor http://www.blazerboard.com take away from the hits that the http://www.oregonlive.com/blazers site receives. There are many people from both http://realgm.com and http://www.basketballboards.net that visit only the main page, the Eric blog, and Canzano's blog for information, then return to their own little forums. Many people avoid the http://www.oregonlive.com/forums/blazers/index.ssf forums because they are disorganized or full of spam.

http://www.blazermania.com did not affiliate itself with http://www.blazerboard.com to take away anything from the http://www.oregonlive.com/forums/blazers/index.ssf boards, but simply offer a place to post when http://www.oregonlive.com/forums/blazers/index.ssf is broken or invaded by trolls.

Paul Pierce, Gerald Green, Chris Paul and why I am uncoordinated.

Before I start this blog entry on basketball related themes, I thought I would share a story with you to give you an idea on how frickin' clumsy (or incredibly unaware regarding some things) I am.

As I was preparing to take my shower last night, I removed my shirt and swung it around behind me to place on the sink.

However, it seems I am unable to judge distance without actually looking in a particular direction..

Because my shirt LANDED IN THE OPEN TOLIET.

Anyways, on to basketball topics.

In my previous entry, a Blazer fan left a few comments wondering about my views on acquiring Paul Pierce for the third pick and NvE, as well as news regarding possible Blazer (With the third pick) Gerald Green.

Paul Pierce:

For the last week or so, there have been many articles coming out that there have been talks between Portland and Boston regarding all-star guard/forward Paul Pierce, the third pick in this years draft, along with the non-guaranteed contract of Nick VanExel.

This trade has actually been discussed even before the articles started coming out, mainly on the http://www.realgm.com forums between Blazer and Celtic fans.

Let me start out by saying, Paul Pierce is a good basketball player. Obviously, I don't watch a alot of Celtic games but what I've seen I've -generally- liked. He draws alot of fouls, gets to the line, is clutch at the end of the game (game six meltdown aside.)

However, one thing I did notice that stood out to me in a Derek Anderson fashion, during the Pacers-Celtics round one match, is..

He wasn't moving without the ball. He'd linger around in one spot at the top of the perimeter, just waiting.

We can't have that here in Portland. We need tons of movement without the ball, Rip Hamiliton and Reggie Miller style.

It was also brought to my attention by somewhat crazy Celtic fans, that apparently Pierce is not a hard runner. They say the reason they wish to trade him is they are trying to make the transition to a uptempo style of play.

Well, last I was aware, so are we.

So with these things brought to my attention, along with the fact that I can only imagine Pierce getting us to the seventh or eighth seed and a first round exit, I would pass on trading two very valuable assests for him.

People are going to ponder now, "You wouldn't want to trade for someone who would put us back in the playoffs, Cajun?"

Well, it depends. I'd easily trade for someone who could put us in the top four/five and move us into contenders. However, putting us in position for just one of the last two seeds, and an annual first round exit won't bring the crowds back again. Fans will get angry if they don't see Paul hustling, and it will turn into Sheed Part 2.

Now, onto...

Gerald Green:

The commenter who also asked about Paul Pierce, asked for some information on Gerald Green.

I am here to give it to you, although many of you are probably aware of who he is, where he's from, etc.

Gerald Green is a 6'7" (in shoes), 192 pound shooting guard/small forward from Gulf Shores Academy (prep school, I believe. Although it could be a normal highschool.) in Houston, Texas.

He has a 6'9 ¾" wing span, and a 8'8" standing reach.

Most of the scouting reports originally had him listed as 6'8 (in shoes.) but the pre-draft Chicago camp official measurements put it to rest.

It is said he has a 44" vertical, which is of course, very very impressive.

Here is the McDonalds all-american report on him:

"Gerald is one of the best shooters in the 2005 class. He uses his height and athleticism to get his shot off at will. Lethal from three-point range, Gerald can also put the ball on the floor and get to the basket. He possesses a solid mid-range jumper, which will make him a force at the next level. Gerald is active on the defensive end, using his athleticism to create steals and block shots. He has drawn favorable comparisons to NBA star Kobe Bryant. As a junior he averaged 28 points, 13 rebounds and an incredible six blocked shots"

His 2005 senior statistics were:
PPG 33.0 - RPG 12.0 - APG 7.0

He also shot an amazing 60% from three point land.

He's also rail thin. Think Travis Outlaw from two years ago. Green has supposedly been working out and hitting the weights with his father in Houstin, in preperation for the draft.

I hope this gives you some information you were wanting, commenter.

Other Stuff:

In today's article from The Oregonian, Jason Quick talks about John Nash's disappointment with Chris Paul, Deron Williams and Gerald Green refusing to do two on two, or one on one workouts.

http://www.oregonlive.com/blazers/oregonian/index.ssf?/base/sports/1118743039287040.xml&coll=7

"Houston high schooler Gerald Green -- one of the prospects on the Blazers' board for the third overall pick in the June 28 draft -- said he will work out with the Blazers only if he doesn't have to compete against other players.
The Blazers' response: Don't bother coming. "

"They wanted to have Green included in those workouts, but his agent has informed the Blazers that he will only work out by himself.
Illinois point guard Deron Williams and Wake Forest point guard Chris Paul also have made the same request to work out only by themselves. "

""I'm frustrated today because it seems like a number of players at the top are unwilling to showcase themselves, saying they don't want to work out one-on-one or two-on-two," Nash said. "But that makes it hard for me, because if they don't want to compete for the third pick in the draft, then it's hard for me to envision them competing 82 times a season." "

I have to agree with John Nash on this one.

I understand why Gerald Green doesn't want to do one on ones, or two on two's. He's rail thin, and he could probably be pushed around by the more NBA ready (body, at least) that Martell Webster has. (6'7 in shoes, 229 pounds, with both a 6'10 wing span, and 8'10 standing reach, better then Green's.) If he had a poor workout, he could fall and lose tons of money.

But on the other hand..

Martell Webster has alot to lose too. Except, he has more to gain then Green. Green is basically guaranteed a top seven spot with only doing individual workouts. Webster could move up into the top ten with good one on ones, and two on twos. He could also move down, if he doesn't show quickness or great athleticism. Or his shots aren't falling.

Which brings us back to last year's draft.

Telfair had alot to lose too. He was thin (160ish, which I think he still is. He may be up to 170's though) and had a suspect shot, but he still did one on one drills against Duhon and Nelson. This shows his desire to keep trying to move up and show he belongs.

Concerning measurements, Chris Paul measured in at 6'1 in shoes. This is great for Portland. Why, you ask? Well, originally it was thought that Chris Paul would barely hit 6'0 in shoes, which may have caused Atlanta to shy away a bit. So maybe Atlanta will end up taking Paul with the two, then Portland could take Marvin Williams (Who ended up measuring in at 6' 8¼" in shoes, not 6'9) at the 3#. Or Portland could offer the number 3 and the 35# for 2, which wouldn't be unreasonable. Charlotte moved up last year, two spots, with their four, their second round pick, and a future second. Perhaps Portland could offer 3, 35 and a future second. I don't forsee Charlotte offering up both it's first round picks. They can still get a great player at 5 (Gerald Green, Deron Williams, Raymond Felton) and a good player at 13. That is what a young franchise, with only four players under contract next year, needs.

If we can't get Marvin Williams, and with these reports about Gerald Green not wanting to show what he can do one on one, or two on two, I'd like to move down to 7/16 and maybe we could get future second/1st thrown in (although unlikely.). This however, should only be done if Martell Webster greatly impresses in his drills against other top prospects. Here is the McDonalds all-american report on him:

"Martell is a big, strong shooting guard with a consistent three-point shot and NBA range. He complements his perimeter shooting with the ability to post up, which makes him a very difficult match-up. He is a solid ball handler and passer and when combined with his quick first step, he can be unstoppable. Martell also has a smooth mid-range shot, which he creates with his quick first-step. His combination of size and athleticism gives him the ability to guard several positions."

Here are his senior statistics:
PPG 27.1 - RPG 10.0 - APG 2.0

He is also a local Pacific Northwest product, as well.

Nbadraft.net compared him to Glen Rice, along with this:

"Strengths: The total package ... Has the ability to score from anywhere on the court against any defender ... Unstoppable mid-range pull up J off the bounce ... Acrobatic finisher on the break ... Unlimited arsenal of offensive moves that allow him to tear through opposing defenses ... Threat from both inside and out ... Very active on the boards ... Tight handles, effortless drives to the hole, and an overall ease to which he plays the game ... 20 and 10 capabilities every time he plays ... At 6-6 and a rock solid 215 pounds has the size and versatility to play any position at the next level. "

Or maybe Antoine Wright (who draftexpress compares to Ray Allen).
"Offensively, Wright is a true talent and can score in many different ways. His athletic ability makes him an outstanding slashing threat, but what makes him truly unique and dangerous is how he combines that with a deadly perimeter shot. His stroke is beautiful, with nice mechanics, and he hits it at a very accurate clip (about 45% on a large number of attempts). He can shoot it with a man in his face or off the dribble, and he uses just the threat of shooting very nicely as a decoy to catch his man off balance with a head or shot fake and drive towards the lane. He loves to put the ball on the floor and pull-up from the mid-range area (NBA style), usually from 14-16 feet out, and is pretty accurate from here as well. His shot selection is outstanding, as you may have guessed by the fact that despite the fact that he's a star on a small team, he shoots slightly over 50% from the field. "

All in all, I look forward to the workouts this week. It will be quite interesting.

A formal introduction.

Before we begin our wonderful blogging experience together, I thought I'd introduce myself.

My name is Carrie, but we will refer to myself as C.

I am a regular on the oregonlive forums (CajunGolf) , along with the realgm forums (The Sebastian Express) (where crazy people don't go.)

I have been a TrailBlazer fan all my life, which is a mere twenty years.

I was born and still live in Oregon, but I do not reside in Portland.

I will be providing opinions, links and such here.

Feel free to leave any and all comments.

I have arrived.

I am your new blogger.

It is true.

I staged a hostile takeover.

I will post more in a few minutes after I see how this turns out.

Oh, anonymous posters, you may now make comments.
